The interest level of the storybooks is appropriate for children aged about 7 to 12. The two books about Jambo are suited to the youngest.
The readiness of the children varies greatly from culture to culture. Children in Hong Kong start at age 3 while they start at 7 in Central Europe. Books 1A and 1B may be just right for your four year olds or the children may not be ready to print between lines but parts of the books might be adapted and used very successfully. The advantage is that you don’t need to print every page.
Our Children's Curriculum is designed for students aged 5 to 12. There are 10 books - 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B. Each of these titles comprises three sub-titles:
Student Book, Practice Book and a Teacher’s Guide.
Each title includes 14 lessons of 3 to 5 pages in the Student Book, 2 pages in the Practice Book and games to reinforce each lesson in the Teacher’s Guide.
This curriculum is used by many different cultures worldwide. The amount of time required for students to complete a lesson varies greatly depending on their exposure to English, the age that they begin learning English and the number of classes / hours of lessons per week.
It is important for you to know that we DO NOT mail the printed books. We don't mail any books. Our website gives you the ability to download the books you have ordered. You can print as many copies as you need. There is no time limit.

We have a total of seven storybooks that can be downloaded. You can print as many as you need. We do not mail the printed copies as that would make them much too expensive. The books stress listening, understanding, reading and creative writing. There is a Student Book, Workbook and Teacher’s Guide. There are many activities for student participation in the Teacher’s Guide.
These storybooks are suitable for children aged 7 to 12 who know some English. Jambo goes to the Moon and Jambo’s Encounter with Robots have the easiest vocabulary and would be well suited to your African children. We also have a DVD video of Jambo Goes to the Moon if the orphanage has the equipment for playing it. It can be played on a television or a computer monitor. The presentation divides the story into short clips that can be presented separately. The video offers several choices. The children can listen and watch, they can listen and read or they can do all three.

Regarding a student of 11 learning English for the first time the teacher would need to assess the child's background. Is he or she familiar with the alphabet? Is the student living in an English speaking environment? Young children learn a language in the same way that they have learned their first language. They listen and repeat - the teaching of grammar has little meaning for them. We suggest that you try some of the children's materials using the free samples provided on Successful ESL. This is the best way for you to decide on the correct approach.
It is very difficult for very young children to listen to a CD. The content of 1A and 1B in particular doesn’t lend itself to CD. The alphabet song is readily available. They learn by listening to songs and we recommend this approach in conjunction with a regular program. We look forward to completing the recording of Books 2A and 2B within the next months.
In response to your question about the children's materials, we suggest that you purchase the 10 books in the Children's Curriculum. These are essential for offering a well organized program. the Children's Storybooks are designed for supplementary reading and activities.
The best approach to teaching children, or adults, is a combination of whole-language and task-based language teaching methods. This approach uses real-life situations as much as possible, and interactive activities that engage and encourage the use of English.
