EVERYONE LOVES A JOKE!

By Daisy Stocker

Funny jokes are good for our health. We hear them at parties, on the bus, in the theater, on boats and at meetings. We tell them at home, at dinner parties, to our friends and in English class. Some people can remember and tell jokes with a poker face. Some blow the punch line while others give up the telling and read them.
Not everyone tells jokes but we all listen!

We all love to laugh. It’s good for our minds, bodies and souls. Now let’s consider the English Second Language student. He or she wants to laugh, too - probably needs to laugh through his or her struggle with English grammar, rules and exceptions.

Teaching the Simple Present Tense Using the Negative

Most students progress through the positive answers to questions without too much difficulty. The negative answers are more complex, however, because the pattern is different with the use of “to be” than with other verbs.

Generally the structure of an answer to a question using “to be” is straightforward, as we can explain that “not” is placed after the verb.
Examples:
I am not thirsty. / I’m not thirsty.
He is not hungry. / He’s not hungry.

The problem arises when students need to form a negative sentence using a verb other than “to be”. Then they must use “to do + not” and put it in the correct tense while putting the main verb in it’s root form.
Examples:
I do not walk. / I don’t walk.
He does not walk. / He doesn’t walk.
They do not walk. / They don’t walk.

The students find this very difficult and it’s been our experience that it isn’t clearly explained in the grammar books. As this must be taught within the first few lesson of a beginner’s program, it is difficult to explain it to them when their English is so limited.

What are some ways that this structure can be presented?

- if the teacher can speak the student’s first language it would be best, this one time, to explain the structure to them. (As a general rule we recommend that the teacher speak English only.)

- An English only approach would be to give them a short exercise that requires negative answers. Tell them before they start that they’ll encounter a problem. Ask them to find the problem and solve it if they can. Have most of the questions use the verb “to be” but include several using another verb requiring the use of “to do” as an auxiliary. Allow the students to try answering all the questions before asking if they had a problem and then review all the answers with them. Some will have answered as they did using “to be” and they’ll be surprised.

- Another approach is to divide the class into groups of three or four. Give them a set of questions with the answers written in small print in a box at the side. Tell them to try to find the change in structure. In this way they can check their answers as the work together. This approach will produce a number of questions about the difference in the structure.
