Education Instead of Bullets

Second installment of a Report from Afghanistan, where LEWL has donated ESL curriculum to a grass roots project with the US military there to train ESL teachers.

We finally had our first class. There was quite a turn out. At first it was only boys but I reminded them that the class was for a mix of tribes and boys and girls. Some of the elders tried to explain it away but I (through an interpreter with a strong demeanor) told them that perhaps it would be best for their tribes to also bring the girls. That as mothers in the household they would be able to pass whatever education they received to their children. They "saw the wisdom in this" and sent some of the young boys to nearby houses to bring some of the girls you see in the pictures.

The class was a lot of fun-the kids were very active participants; you can imagine some forty odd little voices saying the first six letters of the alphabet. The girls didn't seem to have much classroom environment time and seemed pretty intimidated at first but soon were saying the ABCs as well as the boys.

Afterward we passed out more drawing pads and pencils to the kids and sent them on their way. Its been quite some work getting the first class going but we did it. I may be moved to another province soon but a lot of people here have gotten involved and there are now at least 2 more soldiers who will also be teaching.

I hope this project is successful and maybe even expands-I myself will do whatever I can to promote a focus on education and educational volunteer work wherever they send me

USING GAMES TO TEACH ESL

One of the challenges in teaching English as a second language is to make learning as effortless as possible. By making learning easy and fun, the instructor can ensure that the material imparted is received, understood and retained. Language is all about meaning and context. The best way for students to find meaning and context in what they are learning is if they experience it. Is it possible then to teach the English language by allowing the participants to experience it? Yes it is possible, through games.

According to Lee Su Kim, author of Creative Games for Learning Class, using games in the classroom help students to sustain the effort of learning. More to the point, it fosters interaction. What is language but a means to communicate? Through these fun activities, instructors will be able to promote the practice of English.

Real-learning is when even outside the learning place, the student will still be able to apply the subject matter. Instructors have to understand that the more relaxed the learning environment is, the less anxious the students will be. Hence, the easier the students will be able to assimilate what is being taught.

However, the use of games in ESL instruction requires careful planning, design and execution. Games should not be used as ice breakers or time fillers only. They should be used as part of the instructional design. Games should be seen and used as a motivational tool. Below are a couple of suggested games and their application.

1. Charades – The class can be divided into mini-groups. The white or black board should accordingly be divided depending on the number of groups there are. Each group should have an assigned person who will draw the given phrase and an assigned person who will shout the answer. The other members will act as coaches. The instructor will show a phrase to the representatives and the first group to guess the answer wins the round. The time allocated for each round should not be too long because this activity should foster information retrieval and information relaying. This activity should best be used as a review for idiomatic expressions.

2. Guessing game – The instructor will write a word on a piece of paper and tape the piece of paper on the back of a student. The instructor should do the same for all the participants. The students should not know what word is posted on their backs. The instructor should then tell everyone that they can each ask three closed-ended questions (answerable by yes or no) from each of their peers in order to guess what the word is. This game is best used for students who already have a working knowledge of sentence structure. The game can serve as an introduction to question formulations, which essentially reverses word orders.

Retirement age - - FREE Activity!

Workers may soon see a major change in the length of their working lives. An American expert on society and work said yesterday that the age at which people retire might one day be 85 instead of 65. This means the idea of early retirement may disappear completely. Stanford University biologist Shripad Tuljapurkar told scientists at a convention in the USA that modern medicine and technology will mean people will live to be much older than now. He said this would greatly reshape our image and reality of work. He added economies would not be able to support so many retired people.

Professor Tuljapurkar believes that most people living in today's industrialized societies will live to be 100. He said once scientists unlock the key to the gene that makes us age, society will change dramatically. "Some people believe we are on the brink of being able to extend human lifespan significantly. We have doubled human life span in the last century", he said. He has warned that many workers will discover their pension companies do not have enough money to fund their retirement. He added that dreams of early retirement will remain just dreams.

1. RETIREMENT: In pairs / groups, talk about what life would be like to be retired. Write down five differences of retiring at 65 and 85 years old. Share these with your partners. What are the benefits of each retirement age? Change partners often.

2. CHAT: In pairs / groups, decide which of these topics or words are most interesting and which are most boring.

Workers / working lives / experts / retirement / modern medicine / technology / economies / 100-year-olds / keys / genes / pensions / life spans / dreams

Have a chat about the topics you liked. For more conversation, change topics and partners frequently.

3. AT THE SOCIAL CLUB: You are 100 years old. You have been retired now for 15 years. You are at the retirees social club. Talk to the other 100-year-olds about being 100. What do you do every day? What do you want to do in life? How much longer do you hope to live? Ask each other the questions normal of 100-year-olds.

4. GOLDEN YEARS: Talk about each of these times in our lives. What are the things we typically do during these periods? Would these things change if we lived to be much older and retired at 85 years old?

  • Teenage years
  • Our twenties
  • Being thirtysomething
  • Our 40s
  • In our 50s
  • 60 to 69
  • Being a septuagenarian
  • Over 100

5. LONGEVITY OPINIONS: What do you think about these opinions? Students A agree with them, Students B disagree.

  1. Scientists should never try to make us live longer.
  2. Increasing our life span increases problems linked to overpopulation.
  3. It's better to die naturally than take medicine to live longer and work until 85.
  4. People retiring at 85 means a much wiser and experienced work force.
  5. A retirement age of 85 will turn us into slaves.
  6. A later retirement age is only good for pension companies.
  7. Early retirement is a basic human right.
  8. Living to be over 100 would be great.

6. RETIREMENT: Spend one minute writing down all of the different words you associate with the word "retirement". Share your words with your partner(s) and talk about them. Together, put the words into different categories.
